5 Tips for Maintaining Impact Windows

By June 21, 2022No Comments

One of the best things about impact windows is that you don’t need to rush to the store to buy lumber or get out on a ladder to hang hurricane shutter when the weather channel says a massive storm is heading your way. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do on your end at all. Just like any other window, or any other type of glass actually, there are a few do’s and don’ts of impact windows care. Don’t worry, though, all of them are significantly easier than what your storm prep would be like without them!

Maintaining Impact Windows

A few impact windows cleaning tips include:

#1 Clean in the morning or late afternoon. If you clean your windows in direct sunlight, this will lead to watermarks that are difficult to remove. Instead, we recommend you start early in the day or late in the afternoon, because this is when the sun isn’t directly shining on your windows.

#2 Always use a microfiber towel. Just like the right type of glass is important for creating impact windows, using the right cleaning materials is necessary for maintaining them. High-quality microfiber towels are the perfect non-abrasive tool for cleaning your impact windows. Beyond these special towels, you’ll also need non-abrasive glass cleaner and a squeegee.

#3 Remove dirt buildup with water. Now, it’s time to learn how to clean them. Before wiping or using a squeegee, spray each of your windows with water. This will remove an excess buildup of abrasive sand and dirt, which might scratch the windows if you rub them off dry.

#4 Use a squeegee for drying. You don’t want to let your windows air dry, because there will be streaks. Instead, use a squeegee to remove excess water. Start at the top and work your way downwards.

#5 Use your microfiber towels. Now is the time to apply the non-abrasive cleaner and wipe it off with a microfiber towel. Never allow the cleaning solution to dry on your windows. Wipe it off immediately, which means doing each window one at a time. As you do so, remember to switch out dirty towels with a clean one. For best results, use a non-abrasive cleaner approved by your windows manufacturer.
